There is no doubting the fact that the diamond definitely draws attention from many people.  It is on of the most valuable gemstones available.  It is a strong stone that does not have many vulnerabilities.  In fact, the diamond is so strong that early authenticity tests used to involve whether or not a diamond could scratch glass.  If the diamond made a substantial pit in the glass it was real, but if the stone had no effect on a piece of glass it was fake.  Its strength has led it to have many applications for cutting certain materials, like steel.

Diamonds are frequently chosen by jewelers for various pieces that require an exquisite stone to complete the look.  You can find diamonds in many different jewelry designs, including necklaces, rings, earrings, and bracelets.  When jewelry designers are creating the jewelry for people to buy, they are often working with diamonds that have been cut before they received them.  They must then select the right diamond for each piece, which is based on several criteria.

First the jeweler picks the diamonds based on the shape of the cut.  There are many different cuts to choose from, but the most common diamonds are found in the round, oval, brilliant, and marquis cuts.  Round diamonds are rounded with multiple facets.  Ovals are oval shaped and are often multi-faceted but not as much as the round cuts.  Brilliant cuts are named as such because they are cut specifically to maximize the amount of light refraction that is possible from diamonds.  Marquis cuts are an elongated version of the oval diamonds, but the longest parts are more pointy.  The marquis cuts are commonly chosen for more intricately designed jewelry, like rings with scroll work.

When jewelers pick out the diamonds that they will be using to make their jewelry, there is a rating system that they go by, kind of like a jeweler’s diamond code.  Jewelers select the finest diamonds based in how a diamond looks.  Color is important.  Diamonds should be as translucent as possible, unless they are colored diamonds. 

Clarity is another aspect for picking out diamonds.  Clarity is how clear the diamond is.  This also applies to colored diamonds.  If a jeweler finds diamonds that are foggy and do not have a high level of clarity, they are rejected as sub par or defective.  An absence of clarity is a major flaw in diamonds.

There are many reasons why diamonds are known as a girl’s best friend.  The value is a big part.  They are also extremely desirable because they look good on any size hand and on any skin tone.  Every girl loves the diamonds in engagement rings, anniversary rings, necklaces and pendants, and of course tennis bracelets.  Diamonds are definitely irresistible.

Diamonds vary in price.  Smaller diamonds, like chips used for accents, are the least expensive.  Larger diamonds are quite costly.  One of the most famous diamonds, the Hope diamond, is worth millions.  The price of the jewelry with diamonds in it will also vary depending on the size of the diamond used, the design, the material (gold or silver), and the karat weight of the materials.  Gold is much more expensive when the karats are more pure.
